If you’re on a mission to improve the aesthetics of your home but don’t have much of a budget – fear not! You’ve come to the right place. One of the biggest misconceptions in interior design is that it costs money to look stylish, but I’m here to let you in on a few secrets.
Luxury home decor is not defined by price tags or brand names but rather how your home is a representation of who you are as an individual.
Inspiration
To the unrefined eyes, the term “luxury” means to pile their homes with as many high-end showroom products as possible. To me, luxury is simplicity, comfort and ease.
First, we begin with addition by subtraction.
Take a look around your home. How many colors do you see?
I recommend start with a neutral base, which means making sure your large, base pieces like kitchen cabinets, walls, sofas, and more are white, off-white, cream, taupe, beige, grey. A lot of high-end spaces will use neutral furniture and then bring in accessories and textiles for a pop of pattern and color!
If you are stuck with an outdated sofa in a color that isn’t exactly what you would consider high-end, but you don’t have the budget for a new one, you can get a slipcover or get it reupholstered. This will even save you money in the long run – it’s much more cost-effective to swap out throw pillows, blankets, prints and even rugs, rather than buy new sofas and furniture every couple of years. Think of your neutral base as a Little Black Dress, which is perfect for all occasions, and all the add-ons as interchangeable accessories.
Then, we move on to your mirrors.
Mirrors and lighting go hand-in-hand, as a few strategically placed mirrors, paired with the perfect lighting, can create the illusion that your space is far larger than it actually is. Simply hang your mirror across a lighting source, like a window or lamp light, to create this illusion. Personally, I’m a big fan of larger-than-life mirrors. Not only is it highly functional but it also widens the space and make your entire house feel larger.
If simplicity is your vibe, a singular, large statement mirror can create a polished and elegant finish. If you’re into eclectic and artist designs, try hanging an assortment of mirrors in various shapes and sizes for more character.

Next, we’re moving on to your windows. Soaring ceiling heights are a striking feature in many expensive homes. If physically raising the ceiling height isn’t within your remodeling budget, use window treatments to create the illusion of a taller ceiling. Hang curtain rods closer to the height of the ceiling and select long, flowing drapes to give your house a much more grand appeal!
Now, we’re going to talk accessories. Elevate old furnitures by switching out the hardware to metal, glass, crystal, etc. If you’re trying to upgrade your kitchen and make it feel warmer, I highly recommend using brushed brass or copper hardware.
Lastly, pick a few accessories that will stand out! Think lamps, antiques, decorative boxes, coffee table books, and more.
