For the past few years, I have been enjoying more time in the kitchen! Not only has cooking at home allowed me to save money while making healthier choices, it has also been a form of therapeutic activity in my daily routine.
If you’re new to the kitchen, don’t worry! I got you. Just a few years ago, I was in your shoes, unsure of the difference between crisco and butter! Okay, so maybe you’re a recent grad, newly independent, or just settling into your first apartment. Every home cook starts somewhere! Here’s a list of essential cookware and tools you’ll need to kickstart your culinary journey.
First, you’ll need a basic knife set. One of my favorite affordable knife sets that has all the bare essentials you need is Wanbasion 6-Piece Matte Black Titanium Plated Knife Set, which includes the following:
- 8” Chef Knife for daily slicing, chopping and dicing (mainly vegetables)
- 8” Carving Knife for slicing meats
- 7” Santoku Knife, 8” Bread Knife for all purposes, whether to cut meat, fruits or vegetables
- 8” Bread Knife for, you guessed it, cutting the bread into perfect slices
- 5” Utility Knife for multi-purposes knife that handles small pieces of food
- 3.5” Paring Knife for cutting fruits
I’ve been using OXO’s Good Grips Carving & Cutting Board since I started cooking more and the board has held up nicely. The board has rubber grips to prevent slippage and a drip-catcher which comes in handy when cutting juicy meats.
The most important tools in the kitchen are the ones that can help you measure ingredients! Until you get to be so good at measuring with your eyes or simply “feel it out”, I highly recommend you use measuring cups and spoons so your culinary master piece won’t taste too experimental!
My favorite kitchen utensil set is Home Hero’s 25-Piece Set! This combination includes the following:
You’ll need multi-usage mixing bowls to complement your cooking! These Yihong 7-Piece Mixing Bowls are perfect for salads, preparing marinades, mixing batters, serving and storing food.
